10th September 2009

Lighter winds today and summer seems to have returned although the northerly breeze turning to the north east during the early morning did not produce any warblers at all. Some autumn birds however did put in an appearance with 3 Eider (below left) drifting west passed the north end, closely followed by 2 Grey Wagtails (left) alighting on the rocks by the lightboat house.

A female Stonechat (right) was unexpected as September is not the optimum month for these visitors to Hilbre.
Only 2 Wheatears could be found, but some Meadow Pipits arrived in small numbers and a few dozen Swallows went through during the morning, while a single Redpoll called overhead the island on its way south, likewise a Skylark was heard half way to the mainland.

Small numbers of butterflies responded to the warmth including Painted Lady (far right), Speckled Wood, Peacock and Red admiral (right).
Ringed:- 2 Robins
